Carrots

Carrots are fully ripe when their shoulders reach up out of the ground and the leaves turn a rich, darker green than they were during the growing season.

If you get impatient, you can harvest carrots as soon as they're large enough to eat. Plant extra so you can harvest baby carrots during the growing season while you wait for them to fully mature.

Choose a good site.

Many people think that a vegetable garden is ugly and must remain out of sight. Nothing can be farther from truth. A well laid out and maintained vegetable garden can also be very pleasing to the eyes.

The best site is the one near the house for easy and quick access, especially if you are using your spare time for gardening. Also the site must receive full sunshine all day, free of big rocks, perennial weeds and grasses, should be sheltered from strong winds and have good air circulation.

Dealing with slugs

If you have any problem with slugs in your garden, choose a night when you don't expect rain, take a pie plate or other deep plate, and place it under the plant. Fill the plate with beer. Slugs love beer and will abandon the plant to drink it. While drinking, they become quickly intoxicated and will slip into the beer and drown. Leave the plate or plates there for about 24 hours before checking.

This can be repeated as often as needed and could even be left in place and refilled. There is no risk to your plants from the beer, and you won't even have to worry about harming any stray animals that might come in contact with your pest control.
