Getting Started - Soil Type

Light and Sandy, Heavy Clay...?

Soil Type

Heavy clay soil can take longer to warm up in spring - (raised beds can help the soil warm up quicker). This means that earlier crops can by difficult to grow successfully but later crops fair buch better and need relatively little watering.
Light sandy soils, can on the other hand be great for early crops, but can be too dry and unproductive later in the year.
It can be unproductive to struggle against the nature of your soil, so if you have a clay soil consider raising early crops in containers and if a light soil, grow late maturing crops in shallow trenches for ease of watering.
